Overview

About

Seigen is a complete family of traditional Argentine cutlery. The system includes three coordinated product ranges:

  • Ñandú (entry range) – knife blades in five sizes.
  • Seigen (mid range) – nine knife sizes plus forks, carving forks, and sharpening steels.
  • Seigen Hygieia (premium range) – fully assembled stainless steel 440C products with ebony handles designed to comply with European hygiene standards.

Across the three ranges, the platform supports 119 product variants plus packaging.

A distinctive patented feature across the platform is the “gota”, a subtle enlargement on the bolster guard that improves safety and enables reliable interaction with stainless steel sheaths.

Today, Seigen blades are widely used by knife makers across Argentina and have become one of the country’s reference blade platforms.

Key achievements

Seigen entered the process as a collection of loosely defined blades. It came out as a structured industrial platform — manufacturable at scale, ready for international markets, and true to the origins that make it the reference for Argentine craftsmen.

  • Rejection rates dropped from over 35% to below 5% through precise technical documentation and standardized geometry.
  • A parametric architecture supporting 119 product variants across three coordinated ranges — including the premium Hygieia stainless steel line built to European hygiene standards.
  • Packaging and technical standards aligned for US market entry.
  • Seigen blades are today the reference platform for knife makers across Argentina.

Context

Challenges

Communication, Profitability, and Production Reliability

Before the development process began, production relied on informal drawings and reference parts interpreted directly by overseas manufacturers.

This affected the product ecosystem across multiple dimensions:

  • Inconsistent geometry between batches.
  • More than 35% rejection rates during local quality control.
  • Limited scalability across product variants.
  • Difficulty entering export markets requiring packaged retail-ready products.

Designing a Complete Cutlery Line

The client required three product tiers, with the premium range needing to comply with European Union regulations.

Objectives

The development strategy focused on:

  • Translating conceptual definitions into precise manufacturing geometry.
  • Building a scalable parametric platform across three product ranges.
  • Integrating the patented gota feature consistently across all blade families.
  • Improving repeatability across overseas production batches.
  • Reducing scrap rates caused by ambiguous documentation.
  • Enabling the Hygieia premium stainless steel line.
  • Supporting packaging compatibility for export markets including the United States.
  • Establishing ergonomic and visual coherence across the entire product ecosystem.

Scope

  1. Design of three product families and packaging. Create a product system that is scalable and viable both technically and economically. A total of 119 products plus packaging.

  2. Master technical documentation for manufacturing (DMP).

  3. Coding system and development of custom technical query software for product traceability.

Our Contribution

The conceptual direction of the products was defined by the client based on deep knowledge of traditional Argentine knife culture and market expectations.

Our role was to transform that vision into a coherent, production-ready system spanning three coordinated product ranges and more than one hundred variants —ensuring the products remained familiar and desirable to users while becoming reliable to manufacture and scalable to distribute internationally.

Concept

The client defined a clear conceptual direction rooted in the expectations of traditional Argentine knife users.

The development process translated that vision into geometry suitable for industrial production while preserving proportions, ergonomics, and identity across all three ranges.

Features.

The patented gota (drop) feature —developed by the client— was systematically integrated across all blade families. It improves safety by providing a smooth finger contact surface and enables reliable interaction between blades and stainless steel sheaths.

Parametric CAD

A structured parametric CAD framework was created to manage the full product ecosystem.

This ensured dimensional consistency across blades, forks, sharpening steels, sheaths, and packaging components while preserving ergonomic expectations and enabling efficient scaling across ranges and variants.

The platform maintains coherence both within each range and across the three ranges as a unified system.

Design Manufacturing Package

A complete supplier-ready documentation package replaced the informal references previously used in production.

Clear geometry definition, assembly logic, and technical interpretation guidelines eliminated manufacturer guesswork and dramatically improved repeatability across batches.

This transition converted the product family from workshop-style interpretation into an industrial production platform.

Management

Because the platform includes more than one hundred variants, a structured coding system was developed to organize parts, assemblies, and documentation.

A custom technical query tool allows instant identification of product configurations and access to the corresponding drawings and manufacturing files.

This significantly improved communication efficiency between stakeholders and suppliers.
